Usually AMD company  with the production of new processors models preserve compatibility with old motherboard . Certainly, the passage from Socket 939 to Socket AM2 can be considered as exception. Socket AM2+ Processors can also work in Socket AM2 motherboard , but for this it is necessary to update the bios. Problems with the support of too powerful processors usually appeared in Intel production,  but the history proves, that AMD platform also sometimes has similar troubles. For example, the motherboard MSI K9A2 CF on base of chipset AMD 790X (RD780) was deprived from the support of Socket AM2 processors with TDP level=125 W. As producer explains, power system was calculated for the support of processors with TDP level not more than 95 W, and the prolonged operation of processors with higher energy consumption could lead to undesirable consequences. Note that MSI in the description of this motherboard as before mentioned the support not only of processors Phenom 9700 (2.4 GHz) and Athlon 64 fx-62 (2.8 GHz), but also processor Phenom Fx-82, whose level TDP will be equal to 125 W .   Related Products :
