According to the German website Heise Online, at IDF 2016 the company Synopsys demonstrated a sample system with support for PCI Express 4.0 interface. This standard provides the transmission of information at a rate of 16 per second gigahertz twice faster than the PCI Express 3.0. The interface will continue to use copper conductors, even in the version of PCI Express 5.0, which PCI-SIG is already working on . Accordingly, the data transfer rate will vary depending on the quality of the connection.
The needs of modern solid state drives by M.2 allocated no more than four lines PCI Express, so as to increase the capacity of the interface, they will be able to improve their productivity. Network controllers will also benefit from the transition to the new PCI Express 4.0 standard. At IDF 2016 company Mellanox sample showed 100-gigabit network interface card with PCI Express 4.0, backward compatible with PCI Express 3.0.
As Synopsys says, the first products to support PCI Express 4.0 may appear not in the server segment based on x86-compatible processors, as one would expect. Will support PCI Express 4.0, while we can not say with certainty GPUs 2017, but the standard of the market will begin its march it next year.
