Last week IBM company officially presented the new cell processor generation ; the first, specially designed for servers application .
The new processor was called PowerXCell 8i . It will be used in super-computer system road runner, which passes now testing in Los Alamos national laboratory. Road runner will become the first in the world super-computer, capable ensuring productivity at the petaflop level .
New processor is made according to the 65 nm standards . This allows to decrease energy consumption in comparison with 90 nm chips, which work at the same frequency 3,2 GHz. In turn, this allow IBM engineers to place two processors on one motherboard, after preserving its required power in the limits of 250 W (limitation, fixed in the specifications of IBM bladeCenter servers). As company asserts, performance on floating point operations with IBM powerXCell 8i processor five times exceeds the initial model cell/B.E ; designed by specialists IBM, Sony and Toshiba.
Server on new processors, received designation the IBM BladeCenter QS22 , it has 16 slot memory DDR2 (up to 32 GB). Related Products :
