ATI and nVidia on the basis of chips R600 and G80 will consume accordingly up to 130-300 w . Manufacturers of power units have started to prepare for their launch, they will suggested products of power capacity 1000 w and above. At least, the power from two such videocards will demand such as a power unit, in fact it will be not the unique consumer of power in system. Manufacturers of cooling systems has also been prepared for the launch of such power hungry cards :-).
Now we know, that chip R600 will be issued in 0.08 micron technical process, and chip G80 will be inl 0.09 micron .
Fortunately, Japanese site on this theme has published some reasons on current week. Having used a subjunctive mood, the Japanese colleagues argued on that, " as it would be good, if chip R600 was made on 0.065 microns ". The matter is that necessity of support DirectX 10 and transition on unified shader architecture has caused increase in number of transistors by 40 % in comparison with the R580. It means, that the number of transistors in R600 will increase by about 384 million to the size exceeding 500 million of transistors.
By itself, all those transistors need be placed on one crystal. core R580 has the area 342 mm. Transition to more "thin" 0.08 microns technical process will allow to receive some economy in the core area , as a result R600 will have the area of a kernel of the order 380 . Mm. As you can see, the increase in number of transistors by 40 % was expressed only in 10 % increase in the core area . Quite good result :).
Meanwhile, if ATI has selected for R600 the 0.065 microns technical process ,the core area would be reduced up to 250 Mm, this is alone a potential of power requirement reduction . Now, when R600 should be made in 0.08, its power requirement level should exceed the one of R580 by approximately 1.6 times. It means, that consumation by videocards on the basis of chip R600 in power can pass for 200 w - in full loading .
Whether G80 will be more economic, in fact the chip will remains in the outdated 0.09 microns .from calculations, and nvidia data : videocards on the basis of chip G80 will consume about175 w. For comparison - GeForce 7900 GTX eat 120 w, for GeForce 7950 GX2 - 143 w.
as you can see, promised up to 300 w a :). On the other hand, manufacturers of videocards should approach especially carefully to designing system of cooling, in fact chips G80 and R600 will strongly heat up, and to remove heat from them it is desirable with the minimum level of noise. Whether manufacturers will consult this problem soon, and we for certain soon will learn.
