To approve the acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, engaged in hard drives production, Western Digital had to make concessions to the European anti monopoly authorities to sell the U.S. company main production assets to produce 3.5-inch hard disk drives.
Chinese authorities consider that the deal would weaken competition in the HDD market, which, in fact, will be divided between three companies: Western Digital, Seagate Technology and Toshiba. According to requirements, Hitachi GST for two years after the acquisition by WD should remain independent and self-engaged in the production, sales, research and design activities. In addition, WD and Hitachi GST are forbidden to exchange confidential information on prices and customers.
Earlier,U.S. Federal Trade Commission (Federal Trade Commission, FTC) forced to transfer some production of WD 3.5-inch hard disk drives and related intellectual property rights to Toshiba, which, in turn, will give WD shares subdivision Toshiba Storage Device Thailand. Related Products :
