During Server Memory Forum 2012 server hardware manufacturers and their partners have once again returned to a discussion of the new standard DDR4 RAM, the introduction will begin next year. So, DDR4 memory will be characterized by increased bandwidth and capacity with respect to previous decisions, but the main advantage of the standard will be the lower power consumption. Conventional DDR3 modules operate at a voltage of 1.5 volts, and in DDR3L DDR3U versions rate reduced to 1.35 and 1.25 volts, respectively. The default voltage for DDR4 modules will not exceed 1.2 volts, and manufacturers have conducted tests of DDR4-2400 memory, working at voltage of 1 volt.
Currently finalizing JEDEC specifications for DDR4 memory RDIMM and LRDIMM, mass production of modules will begin in the first half 2013. Also, the organization is working on standardization of multi-chip solutions and a wide bus. Curiously, JEDEC is already working on DDR5 standards , suggesting an entirely new memory architecture and bulk configuration with the use of technology Through-silicon via.
