Some time ago we reported that the generation of Intel processors Haswell can get a dedicated cache in the fourth level, which will be designed specifically for the needs of graphics core. The processors will exist in several aspects: solutions of primary and secondary levels with a single crystal on a substrate bearing a computational core and graphics system, and a high-level solutions, which will be placed on the substrate and high-speed memory chip eDRAM (larger than 16 MB) associated with a specific CPU bus. Haswell processors and Broadwell will be characterized by the design concept LGA 1150.
The purpose of this cache is getting rid of processor from the bottleneck in the form of slow memory, hindering the performance of computing devices. In addition to beneficial effects on the graphics engine to increase AVX performance , which in combination with a new block of instruction multiply-addition (FMA), which will be implemented in Haswell, will at least double the performance in floating point operations.
The first single chip that contains a cache, Intel processors used in the Pentium Pro (pictured) in 1995. This has made the decision too expensive: the cost of Pentium Pro 200 model with 1 MB L2 cache was up to $ 2650.
