The first independent tests of  Intel Haswell processors  carefully evaluate the superiority of the future new products over the generation of Ivy Bridge processors.  In any case, it refers to the work of processing cores.  Haswell graphics core is much better than integrated graphics generation Ivy Bridge.  New microarchitecture Intel is focused on multi-threaded load, which can lead to a slight increase in performance . A significant step forward for Haswell is not going to be computing architecture, but transfer to a substrate voltage regulator to the processor - the so-called integrated voltage regulator (Integrated Voltage Regulator).  Later, Intel will bring IVR in the processor die, and then it would be called a fully integrated regulator or FIVR (Fully Integrated Voltage Regulator).

 

We have already reported on the basic capabilities of IVR Haswell.  The motherboard will have two basic voltage regulator - one for the memory, the other - for the processor.  But handing out power between processing units will be integrated module VR.  Thus, we reduce the number of external power supply lines on the motherboard and are able to increase the power wiring .  This approach allows to save up to 50 times on the board and organize separate supply bus for a greater number of functional processor units  .    Haswell can independently power cores, graphics cores, system bus and PLL-circuits.

The  integrated module   of Haswell includes 20 aligned cells, each of which has 16 phase supply with strength to 25 A (1.56 A per phase).  In sum, IVR can withstand currents up to 400 A.  It is obvious that the integration of VR into the processor package will lead to some increase in the TDP.  The TDP of Haswell is going to be at the level of 84 watts, and the TDP Ivy Bridge -  77 watts, the fee for the integration of the voltage regulator will increase the thermal package of new products by up to 10 watts or so.  This clearly benefits for mobile platforms..

 

For those who are interested in the stability and high efficiency.  The voltage will be at the level of 0.002 V, and care supply due to changes in temperature regimes - about 0,001 v. In this case, Intel says about the characteristics of IVR, produced using 90-nanometer process technology.  For IVR, produced with the same process technology, and that the processor chip - to 22-nm - quality features promise to be even better.

 

Also increases the response of the control system power load changes as a step down the voltage.  For example, external VR switched with a frequency of 100 kHz to 1 MHz.  Cell supply voltage regulator Haswell switched frequencies from 30 MHz to 140 MHz.  This is 30-100 times faster than the working phase power on the motherboard.  With the release of Haswell motherboard manufacturers will have to try hard to come up with new ways to advertise their products.
