It was thought that buying Japanese memory manufacturer Elpida , Micron will allow the U.S. to enter the three largest manufacturers of memory, on the first places in the area which holds the South Korean giants Samsung and SK Hynix. Now DRAMeXchage experts, say the ability to bypass Micron SK Hynix in terms of products, and to take second place in the ranking of the leading memory manufacturers .
In fact, Samsung is able to produce up to 360,000 wafers per month, and after buying Elpida Micron opportunities grow to 350,000 wafers with chips. SK Hynix can only handle 270,000 wafers per month, which will allow Korean manufacturer of memory to gain a foothold only in third place. In the first quarter 2013, Micron claimed only 13% of the RAM market, Elpida occupied 13.8% and SK Hynix boasted share of 26.5%. It is easy to calculate that in the aggregate Micron and Elpida will be able to beat SK Hynix, excluding market swings.
In the segment of mobile Memory Elpida positions were strong. In fact, out of 100,000 wafers monthly issued by the company at its factory in Hiroshima, about 90% memory chips is destined for mobile devices. The share of Elpida in the first quarter accounted for 18.5% of the market of mobile memory, SK Hynix held 21.5%, and Micron satisfied with only 2.7%. Taiwanese factories Rexchip and Inotera, which also come under the control of Micron, can combine to produce up to 200,000 wafers a month of memory chips. The main production facilities Micron focus in Asia. In addition to solid-state memory, Micron will manufacture memory for mobile devices and servers. Market conditions allows to predict the growth of these segments: solid state drives are gaining popularity and increasing sales of smartphones can earn not only in supplying the memory for these devices, but also the sale of RAM for servers, because the need to expand the "cloud environment" stimulates growth of this market segment.
