The mass production of the first batches of flexible OLED-displays both major South Korean manufacturer - Samsung and LG - will begin in December this year. It will be 5-6 inch displays, which will help to release hundreds of thousands of test models smart phones and other devices. For transfer to the flexible screens high end models existing facilities are not enough, however the existing company will be able to estimate demand and to plan investments in this direction in the next year.
For the production of flexible displays, Samsung will use 5.5G generation factory with a capacity of 8,000 wafers per month (substrate size - 1300 x 1500 mm). This is the so-called line A2, which now produces OLED-displays. Installation of additional equipment will restructure production to production of flexible displays. Announced capacity will enable the company to produce 1-1.5 million a month 5-6 inch flexible displays. If the demand for the new screens will exceed expectations, the company intends to fully convert to production of flexible displays new factory - A3.
The LG Display company has a more modest possibilities for the production of flexible OLED. For this, it is preparing factory generation 4.5G (substrate size - 730 x 920 mm). AP2 monthly line can produce 75,000 and 12,000 conventional substrates for flexible displays. The output of LG can each month up to 500,000 flexible displays for smartphones. In case of strong demand for flexibility, the company plans to move to a new production factory generation 6G.
