AMD processors will get DDR- 3 memory support only after passage on 45 nm technical process, but not immediately. In other words, the first generation of shanghai processors can support DDR-2, and the next revisions can propose DDR- 3 support . Strictly speaking, alternating DDR-2 and DDR- 3 support exactly had to become the special feature of AMD processors socket AM3.

After the announcement of barcelona processors ,  on AMD site appeared the following document , intended for BIOS developers under AMD processors the so-called family 10h. On page 60 of this document are described the properties of memory controller in barcelona processors :

Already now in the memory controller there  is possibility to work with DDR- 3 memory . In this there is nothing surprising, the collection of commands interfaces DDR-2 and DDR- 3 are distinguished insignificantly. Shanghai processors will become the evolutionary continuation of barcelona processors , so its completely natural to see some DDR- 3 support even now. This function will be opened in the necessary moment .
