Intel company plans to increase the performance of itanium processors not only by number core increase but also by increasing the power of each core.
At the conference gelato itanium conference/expo, Cameron mcNairy, Intel company engineer and the creator of itanium architecture , noted that the possibilities of processors with the work of single-flow tasks were not not optimized and Intel company searches for ways to increase the performance with each new iteration of itanium processors.
The passage from Itanium 2 9M (2004, madison, 6-9 mb cache, 130- nm process) to the dual core itanium 2 (in July 2006, Montecito, 90 nm process) was accompanied by several changes in construction; however, in essence the processor remained practically the same.
In the following itanium iteration , after transfer from Montecito to tukwila core Intel plan to improve the single-flow core productivity .
In its presentation mr. mcNairy noted that there are many tasks where Intel will optimize in new itanium .
According to the company plans , montvale will be released in this year, and the chips tukwila will appear only in 2008-2009 yr.
