Kumar CFO AMD, speak not only about the results of company activities for a certain period, but also to share with investors strategy elements. As explained Kumar during his speech at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference, in recent years the leadership AMD poses engineers to adhere to standardized technological and architectural solutions that allows you to use the same units to quickly create a variety of products. Accordingly, this allows to keep the cost of creating new products in predictable frames.
Interestingly, at the direction of semiconductor solutions AMD is not going to chase every possible deal for the sake of increasing the percentage of boot factories contractors and increase sales volume . In this sense, much more important for AMD profitability of the project, and it is going to deal with only the most profitable deals. According to Kumar, AMD will not rush into new market segments, blindly following fashion. In the segment of the PC, for example, the company now sees prospects in convertible devices and the corporate sector, but the tablet or smartphone are not interested in it - too high entry price, and consumer interest in tablets is already reduced.
It is interesting that AMD did not concerned about the issue of maintaining Moore's Law, because now the company does not own factories, and all relevant concerns are borne by Globalfoundries and TSMC. At the same time, AMD does not consider it necessary at any cost to strive for the most advanced lithography process technology - if it is economically justified, it is possible to use and process technologies of previous generations. For example, now the majority of products produced by AMD 28-nm technology, and although Devinder Kumar promised to release next year a number of 20-nm products, strive for technological progress in this area the company prefers taking into account economic feasibility.
