According to EE Times website, Sony Corporation reached an agreement with Murata company for the sale of the main part of its assets owned unit of Sony Energy Devices, and related to the development and production of batteries. State engineers, patents, technology, and manufacturing facilities in China and Singapore - that will get Murata for an amount that has not been disclosed. The transaction should be completed by the end of March 2017.
Sony reserves the right to sell batteries for portable devices, rechargeable by USB port, as well as the batteries "tablet" form factors and alkaline "batteries". The Sony batteries division, was founded in 1975, by 1995 it mastered the production of lithium-ion batteries. In recent years, the company specialized in lithium-ion cell cylindrical shape and a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. They brought more profit than the more popular options for batteries. Now, the business will go under the control of Murata.
