BMW company has long sold not only projection displays in their cars. Now, according to EE resource Times, both controls should be united in a new development. In January's CES 2017 in Las Vegas, BMW promises to demonstrate a prototype of a holographic touch interface. Images and inscriptions will be like to soar through the air between the driver and the center console, and it will not need to touch any surfaces to confirm commands.
Note that to implement such tactile sensations has long promised the British company UltraHaptics - sensor accurately tracks a set of spatial position of the tips of the fingers of the user and the system directs a focused pulse of ultrasound, which mimics the tactile sensations from contact with surfaces of different shapes. You can even simulate such controls as the sliding regulator. No need to reach for the center console will reduce the time for which the driver is distracted from the road.
