Updated list of 500 powerful systems

The list of 500 most powerful computing systems in the world is updated twice a year.  Yesterday, there was such an update , which is timed to coincide with the beginning of the annual conference ISC High Performance.  As always, system performance is defined in the Linpack benchmark.

The list is headed by the Chinese system Sunway TaihuLight, installed in the center of the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi.  The system is based on the RISC-processors of the own development of the Chinese center National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology (NRCPC).  The Sunway TaihuLight system is not the first time unattainable for competitors, and its performance is 93 petaflops.

The second place is also the Chinese system Tianhe-2 (Milky Way-2), created in the national center of the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) and deployed in the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou.  The performance of Tianhe-2 is 33.9 petaflops.  We add that the Tianhe-2 system headed TOP500 list three years in a row, until Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer started operating in June 2016.

The third line in the TOP500 was taken by the upgraded Piz Daint (Cray XC50) system at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS).  The upgrade was carried out by adapters NVIDIA Tesla P100, which doubled the system performance in Linpack from 9.8 petaflops to 19.6 petaflops.  Thus, the Piz Daint system rose from the fifth line to the third and pushed the American Titan system (Cray XK7) from the third to the fourth place.

The productivity of Titan is estimated at 17.6 petaflops from 2012, when it was deployed to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge National Laboratory).  This is the second time in the history of the TOP500 list when US supercomputers lost their prize positions.  The first time this happened in 1996, when the first three places were released by Japanese supercomputers.

Also, the Sequoia system (17.2 petaflops) at the Livermore National Laboratory (IBM BlueGene / Q) was included in the top ten systems;  The Cori system (14 petaflops) in the National Energy Research Computing Center (Cray XC40);  Oakforest-PACS (13.6 petaflops) system in the Japanese Center for Advanced High Performance Computing (Fujitsu PRIMERGY);  Supercomputer Fujitsu K (10.5 petaflops) in the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS);  The Mira system (8.6 petaflops) at the National Laboratory of Argonne (IBM BlueGene / Q);  And Trinity (8.1 petaflops) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (Cray XC40).

As we see, despite the loss of the third place in the list of 10 most powerful systems, five American supercomputers are still present in the top ten.  In total, the top 500 systems include 169 American supercomputers, which is more than 160 other Chinese, 33 Japanese, 28 German for 17 French and English.  The total performance of TOP500 list systems from the previous calculation (per year) increased by 32% to 749 petaflops.  The growth in productivity for the year has slowed since 2013.  There was a time when for a year the total capacity of the systems grew by 185%.

Among the suppliers of processors for TOP500 systems is quite predictably the dominant processor Intel (Xeon and Xeon Phi).  They became the basis of 464 out of 500 systems.  IBM processors can be found in 21 systems, and AMD Opteron - in 6.

For six months, accelerators / coprocessors have increased their presence from 86 systems to 91. Most often, manufacturers choose NVIDIA GPUs, which can be found in 74 systems.  Intel Xeon Phi accelerators are found in 17 systems (three of them use combinations of Xeon Phi and NVIDIA GPUs).  One system runs on AMD Radeon accelerators and two on PEZY technology.  Separately there are 13 systems on Xeon Phi (Knights Landing), which are used as central processors.

By network interfaces.  Ethernet technology is used in 207 systems, and InfiniBand in 178. However, in the "elite" systems - in the first 100 supercomputers - only one system with Ethernet and 42 with InfiniBand.  The Intel Omni-Path bus is used in 38 systems, and a year ago it was only at 8.

Among the suppliers of supersystems, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is leading.  They delivered 144 of the 500 systems in a new list (25 systems were installed by SGI, which HPE bought in 2016).  On the second place goes Lenovo with 88 delivered systems.  In third place Cray company with 57 systems (but Cray systems "owns" 21.4% of the total performance of TOP500).  HPE systems thus own 16.7% of productivity, and only Chinese Sunway TaihuLight - 12.5%.
