The two largest manufacturers of hard drives on magnetic plates consider an approximately identical set of technologies, allowing to increase the density of recording or placement of plates in the case. The structure of the magnetic plates will change, their local heating using a laser will be used, and hard disks with two spindles will appear. However, already now WDC and Seagate are using to increase the number of magnetic plates in the case of the hard disk helium environment.
WDC inherited the technology of filling hard drives with helium from HGST, and began mass production of the appropriate drives from the end of 2013, and Seagate mastered this technology only last year. It moves on this direction not very willingly, while counting on increasing the recording density on one magnetic plate due to various improvements. Western Digital already offers hard drives with a capacity of 12 TB, filled with helium, and Seagate does not hurry, which can lead to the loss of some market positions. Experts believe that hard disks with a volume of more than 12 TB can not be produced without using the helium environment - at least in the coming years.
