The memory controller inside AMD platform already moved to the central processors, the chipset continues to be used as functional successors of the south bridges. Chipset for AMD processors must step up in the course of time, proposing support of urgent interfaces and specific for each market segment .
It is completely regular, that the processors opteron 4000/6000 will be require a new chipset. After ATI purchases , AMD company has the capability to propose chipset from her own production in the desktop and mobile market segments , whereas previous AMD chipset was used only in the server segment. SLI Support for AMD processors was ensured by NVIDIA chipset. As reports associate with the reference to one AMD top managers , situation with chipset licensing for NVIDIA company does not allow the appearance of corresponding chipset with AMD processors support following generation. At least, since 2010 AMD expects to release server chipset using its production only. Since AMD now clearly divides processors for servers and desktop processors, situation with the scarcity of alternative chipset in the desktop segment will be hardly repeated. Socket AM3 platform is the successor Of socket AM2+, it does not require new licenses, but the rates of its expansion allow to speak, that in the next two years socket AM3 will not lose urgency as associated chipset. | ||
