POSTER: computer news   ||   ASUS STRIKER EXTREME I680

DATE:2006-11-03

The fundamental characteristics of chipset nForce 680i SLI is already familiar to us . It will obtain the new north bridge, which will  ensure adequate overclocking potential for the experiments with processors Conroe and Kentsfield. Furthermore, this will be one of few chipset, which allow to realize support SLI for the systems on base of processors Intel - with PCI Express x16 + PCI Express x16.

Since the announcement of this chipset will be on 8 November, the descriptions of such motherboard are availble in the Internet. For us we  succeeded to found the photograph of the motherboard Asus Striker Extreme, which for sure will be the selection of those who dream to combine SLI and Conroe .

Asus Striker Extreme nForce 680i SLI chipset

We can see the cooling system on the chipset and on the power subsystem , it consists on thermal tubes with copper radiators.the thermal tubes start in the radiator of south bridge, it  passe through the upper part of the north bridge cooler , through two radiators .   How such cooling is effective, we will see in tests. Possible to assume that chipset overheat and for this reason asus used such cooling system .

Two dark-blue slots PCI Express x16 work at full speed, one white slot PCI Express x16 works in regime PCI Express x8. two slots PCI 2.2 and one slot PCI Express x1.

Directly  chipset  supports processors socket  LGA 775, including Core 2 duo, Core 2 extreme and the four core processors Core 2 quad. It can  work at the bus frequencies of  533, 800 and 1066 MHz. Furthermore, with the release of processors with 1333 MHz bus nvidia promised their support.

Although formally This chipset supports to 8 Gb of memory type Ddr2-800, At overclocking it can support regime Ddr2-1200. thIs board  has only one port Parallel Ata-133, six ports Sata-300. two additional ports eSATA using the controller Silicon Image 3132. Hard disks with interface Serial Ata-300 possible to be united into massifs RAID of levels 0, 1, 0+1, 5 and JBOD. Dual gigabit port supports technology NVIDIA DualNet. There are two ports IEEE 1394a, six ports USB 2.0 are placed on the maternal pay, four other are possible to be connected in the rear panel.

The price of this motherboard is not defined, but it is possible to assume that This last will not be below $200 .

all the video card listed are supported : any PCI-e card will work fine in your motherboard (from ATI or NVIDIA) , But here your motherboard support SLI (Two video card working together) , so u may look for 2 cards from NVIDIA. Note all listed above video card are mainstream , so their performance is not good for gaming :

My choose will be :

  • 1)- HD 4870 x2 (extreme gaming)
  • 2)- HD 4870 (good enough for all current game best performance / price ratio ).

Now if u plan to get two video card for SLI regime :

  • 1)-GTX 280
  • 2)-GTX 260

if u are limited in your budget then u may go with the 9800 GTX + .

Note all depend on your monitor resolution even a single 9800 GTX or HD 4850 is enough for most game @ 1280x1024 (except crysis) .But for higher resolution u may look for 1xGTX 280 or even 2x 9800 GTX+ .

Here is the card ordered by performance :

1) HD 4870 X2

2) GTX 280

3) HD 4870

4) GTX 260

5) HD 4850 and 9800 GTX+

then here will go your listed cards 9600 and 9500 GT .

Hope this will help , U may also use our forum for additional question .

Best regards

8800 gts 320 graphics card ,4 gig of DDR800 xms2 corsair ram,450 ATX PSU,200 sata,3 fan ninja case new, standard intel cpu fan(large)...with the 680i striker extreme motherboard and a standard compact disc dvd player..not much more i can think of although i am upgrading the psu to a 850 atx next week.since ive done the build and its all running sweet ,i checked my performance graphs and noticed the cpu is using next to no processors and the memory seems to take a lot of the workload?while gaming or even just casually browsing the internet.its got me confused?have i bought the right cpu to start with?i read a review on the cpu and read some feedback on how it wasnt compatible with the striker so i am hoping i havent bought the wrong cpu hope im making sense as im no wiz
