POSTER: computer news   ||   CORE BRISBANE LOW SPEED REASON

DATE:2007-01-12

Recently on the pages of our site appeared reviews with the properties of 0.065 m (65 nm) dual core processors athlon 64 X2 (Brisbane). We already know that the processors brisbane are somewhat slower than their 0.09 m (90 nm) predecessors because of the higher delays at the level cache in the second level. The representatives OF AMD this fact decided to comment laconically, after referring to the need for the adaptation of design 0.065 m processors with models having the increased cache volume . However, even processors generation K8L will have only 512 KB cache in the second level in one core, so the explanation AMD by many experts was received skeptically.

Another problem, not directly influencing the speed of processors  : area core upon transfer from 0.09 m to 0.065 m technical process was decreased but not a lot  as it was expected. In principle, on users this fact will have only indirect impact: AMD will be able to obtain from the silicic of one plate only less processors than it would can with the presence of more compact cores. As a result the volumes of deliveries processors will be less, and reserves for reduction in the prime cost  it will be also less.

Associates after consultations with the some sources published their explanation of the modest successes AMD in the passage to the first generation 0.065 m technical process. And latency at the cache level with large core were obtained in the result of general reasons. First of all, two factors influenced the result: the shortage of human service lives and time. AMD has limited engineering resources, and in the prevailing difficult competitory situation it completely naturally concentrated on the preparation for release of processors from the following generation, known to us under the code designation K8L. Specifically, these processors must improve position AMD on the market, and the passage of processors generation K8 to 0.065 m technological standards had lower priority. Furthermore, AMD began the development of the promising hybrid processors fusion, in which it is going to use ATI. This process also distracted itself the big enough part of the qualified engineers.

As a result to the preparation for release of the first 0.065 m processors brisbane were very limited human resources. The task of the small group engineers was maximally simple on the formulation: to adapt the design of core generation K8 to the realias of 0.065 m technology and to ensure a good level of release for suitable production. Meanwhile to accomplish this task without some compromises was not so simply. In particular, the design of core generation K8 was originally oriented to the use of 0.13 m (130 nm) and 0.09 m (90 nm) technical process, and 0.065 m (65 nm) technical process threw engineers somewhat different calls. In order to smooth possible problems with the frequency potential and the operational stability, for the engineers AMD was necessary to draw nearer the electrical characteristics of 0.065 m core with characteristics of 0.09 m predecessors. The required power was reduced, and here design core was necessary to adapt in such a way that its area decreased but not by a lot.

Associates consider that a similar compromise explains not only relatively modest reduction in area core, but also limited frequency potential. We could ascertain that the processors brisbane in overclock differ a little from predecessors. A increase in the latency at the second level level cache also could be made in the favor of larger stability in the assigned frequency band. We will not also forget, that AMD was interested in the fastest passage to 0.065 m technical process, which will allow it to release more processors with smaller expenses. All the remaining tasks in this technological passage have marginal importance.

There is still one hypothesis, which explains the modest frequency and speed characteristics of 0.065 m AMD processors of the first generation. Already in this spring by the production of data processors will be occupied the Singapore company chartered semiconductor, which has less experience in the production of processors. In order to leave it some stored up strength for the possible technological problems to Chartered, company AMD could make processors  brisbane more reliable from the technological effectiveness, but by less perfermant. Finally, Brisbane is only transitional product on the way to processors with the architecture K8L.

Let us recall that all hypotheses presented above are particular opinion of associates....
