Micron company is interested in the possibility of creating a standard modules RAM DIMM performed not only by DRAM chip, but also flash memory chips and NAND. As planned by the manufacturer, the capacity of such a hybrid product can exceed 256 GB, and the data interface will be DDR4.
Hybrid memory modules will be more expensive than solid state drives, but Micron believes that the difference in cost more than offset the advantage in speed provided by the new interface. An important element will be the design of the module controller HDIMM, connecting DRAM and NAND to the CPU.
Micron does not forget about the need to support a hybrid memory in software. In the last six months the manufacturer had several meetings with Microsoft representatives, and to the emergence of mass-produced products with support for DDR4 ready software for the operating system Linux.
