Intel promised to release Skulltrail platform in the current block, and today appeared the first review.

Thus, let us examine the basic of this platform.

The motherboard Intel D5400XS is well familiar. It is capable of supporting two processors Core 2 extreme QX9775 (3.2 GHz) LGA 771, it has four slots PCI Express x16 and four slots Fb-dimm for Ddr2-800 memory installation . finally, the presence of chips NVIDIA nForce 100 allow Intel to state about SLI technology support .

This platform supports only SLI using two video card . The technology 3 way SLI is not supported. This motherboard supports CrossFire technology , and the quantity of video card united in one system depends only on the overall cooling system sizes .

Here is the processors Core 2 extreme QX9775 (3.2 GHz). It s socket is LGA 771 and have four core. Given processors are based on 45 nm core, 2 X 6 mb cache in the second level and the system bus is equal to 1600 MHz. This processor has high TDP level (not more than 150 W) and its price is ($1499 per piece). The multiplier in these processors is unlocked.

This motherboard work also with the usual processors Xeon LGA 771. Theoretically, This motherboard is capable of high overclock. But associates rarely exceeded 405-420 MHz system bus .

But if we increase the multiplier, then the processors Core 2 extreme QX9775 are overclocked to 4.0 GHz with air cooling cooler. The use of Ddr2-800 memory modules Fb-dimm has a negative affects both platform speed and its cost.

After Studying the tests results of Skulltrail platform , we noted those rare regions, where the presence of eight core helps to raise the speed in today computer. These application are rendering , video coding .... As far as games are concerned, present computer will completely successfully manage with less expensive system on the base of four core processor.

The motherboard Intel D5400XS will not cost less than $600. The pair of processors Core 2 extreme QX9775 (3.2 GHz) will cost about $3000. Modules Fb-dimm Ddr2-800 frequently cost two times more than usual. Powerful power unit and a pair of productive video card will cost approximately $1500.
