POSTER: computer news   ||   PHENOM X4 9850 B3 OVERCLOCKING

DATE:2008-03-27

The released today processors phenom (B3 stepping) with four cores interested many overclockers , precisely with passage on this stepping AMD could present models which work at 2.5 GHz frequencies .

Let us start , the processor phenom X4 9850 Black edition possesses high TDP, and it is not simple to overclock the processor - the cores supply voltage is high then analogous models, threshold temperature is below.

As rule, with core voltage approximately 1.4 v many processors phenom X4 9850 (2.5 GHz) overclock to 2.8 GHz (using multiplier), and in this case it passe all tests. Some are even able to reach the frequency 2.9-3.0 GHz with vcore 1.48-1.59 v (processor was not stable at those frequencies).

3ghz phenom b3 step

Possibly, thinner manipulations with BIOS setups and experiments with cooling will allow to reach higher frequency . Perhaps, only passage to 45 nm technical process can be radically change the overclocking potential Of phenom processors.

PHENOM X4 9850 B3 OVERCLOCKING
Hi, I\'m running the following system: MSI K9A2 Platinum AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition 4GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066MHz PC2-8500 2TB over 3 SATA disks, RAIDed Antec TruePower Trio 650W I\'m currently running the processor \"out of the box\" with its supplied cooler fan, at the automatic/default voltage and clock speed (2500MHz). I\'m completely new to overclocking, and keen not to ruin my new system! But reading this article, I\'m interested to learn more. So, could someone please tell me where to begin? Is there a definitive guide anywhere on the net that already describes how to go about overclocking this processor? (if there is one aimed at beginners, I can\'t find it!) I suppose the first thing I want to know is - is it safe for me to overclock this processor? Depending on ambient temperature, it usually idles around 36 degrees at the moment, and goes up to say 55 degrees C under load. Given my current high load temperature, am I just asking for trouble if I overclock at all with my current cooling setup? Next, does anybody know how I would actually go about the overclocking, assuming it is reasonably safe to do so? Preferably without blowing anything up :P Thank you in advance!! Any help would be really, really appreciated :) Cheers Chris

Hi ; welcome to the overclocking world . i am pretty sure that u will never get back :-) From the start let me note that overclocking will void your warranty , so it has to be done at your own risk . First nothings is 100% safe . But if the system is overclocked correctly then it will be fine. second when u overclock heat will increase (due to the higher clock frequency and higher voltage) , so the main part is the cooling witch should keep your processor in a safe operating range . From the start Current AMD Quad processor are far from being the best clocker , the best that u could expect is 2.7-3.0 GHz depend on your processor . Here is how this should be done , 1) run prime 95 in order to load your processor @ max check your temp . 2) Bios increase your HTT/FSB by 10 and check for stability using the same prime 95 if it fail the test u have to add a bit of voltage 0.0025v then check again and so on . Keep your eyes on your temp , in order to keep it in a reasonable range Hope this help

Hi, thanks a lot for the advice! I really appreciate you taking the time out to write that. Never one to pay much attention to warnings, I went ahead and followed your instructions after upgrading my motherboard\'s BIOS to the latest version. I left Prime95 maxing out my CPUs for over half an hour and none of the tests failed, but the core temperatures rose from 32 degrees to as high as 63 (!!!) - is this borderline dangerous? My worry is that on a hotter day, with hotter ambient temperatures (yes, we do have them occasionally in the UK... very occasionally :P ) it would have risen higher than 63 degrees. Your image here <http://xtreview.com/images-added.php?image=images/AMD-x4-updated-processor-and-price-list-05.png&id=4676> suggests that the max temperature for the processor is in fact 61 degrees (!!). Does this mean my existing cooling just isn\'t sufficient for me to even think about overclocking, and isn\'t really sufficient for standard, not-overclocked use? Or alternatively, is the \"maximum temperature\" a load of nonsense, and I\'m actually safe up to say 75 degrees? Many thanks again!! :) Chris

Btw - I notice in your image above you managed to overclock as far as 3.0GHz! Out of interest, what CPU voltage did you hit when you did that? Chris

no problem ,we are here to help . Since your CPU is already @ 63 C stock we are near the max safe , but some tweaking could help . First what u see in this screen shot is not a stable frequency (but good enough for some test ). The CPU voltage used is 1.59 v (for the 3 GHz) . Note AMD quad core are produced using 65nm standard so they heat a lot in comparison with current intel 45nm (witch are even faster clock per clock) . Now let us start with your cooling . Are u using the stock cooler ? . If yes how good is your case ventilation (how many fan ?.). Have u tried to re-seat the cooler on the CPU and apply some good thermal paste (MX-2 is a good option just like AS5). Any way your processor is the 125w version and require from 1.2-1.3v @ 2.5 GHz . Your 63 c @ full load is not so bad but sub 60C @ default frequency is even better . AMD consider 61c as the max case temp . In theory without Vcore increase u could reach 2.6-2.8 (or even 2.9 GHz if u are lucky). In this case your CPU temp will not rise a lot let say u will see a max of 3-6 c increase . with more Vcore your temp will rise up faster , try and report so we can move further

aahhhh forget to note , there are several prime version , u have to load all core . If u have only 2 core loaded (check in the windows task manager) u have to run another prime95 , in order to load the remaining two cores.

Thanks - yep, I ran four instances of Prime95, one on each core. And yep, I\'m using the stock cooler, with what I consider to be fairly decent case cooling - 2 12cm fans (one front, one back). I do however have 3 hard disks, a GeForce 8600GT and 4 optical disc drives generating quite a lot of heat, so it might not be enough. I haven\'t tried re-seating the CPU since installing it, and only used the thermal paste that was on the bottom of the stock cooler. I\'ll take your advice and buy some \"MX-2\" stuff, and see if that helps. I\'d rather not install more fans, as that\'d probably make it too noisy... I\'ll post up how it goes, as I am keen to overclock (even if just by a bit). Cheers!

welcome to the OC community . The MX-2 alone will drop your temp by 3-7c . Waiting for the first oc result . Please consider to join our forum and post your topic there , since it is easier and more comfortable to talk .

Also when uping your HTT/FSB you may want to down clock your RAM unless your using an OC friendly RAM like G Skill, Corsair, OCZ. No Best Buy special Kingston or whatever else they may sell for $100 more than what its worth. The reason for this is, if you up your FSB you will be also overclocking your RAM. Oppps My bad just seen your using Corsair you should be okay if your using DHX or Dominator models. Just us CPUID to check your frequency and use some nasal spray so you can spell them cooking.
