In March, representatives of Seagate said that by the end of this year or the beginning of the next company hopes to release a 12-TB hard disk using magnetic plates with a so-called "tiled" layout. At the last quarterly reporting conference, the competing Western Digital Corporation explained when it would be ready to join this race.
WDC recognizes that Seagate is ahead of it in the pace of mastering the "tiled" record (SMR) in the segment of consumer drives, but for Western Digital the top priority is the economic return from the introduction of certain technologies, and therefore it intends to use "tiled" magnetic plates only after The release of hard drives from 14 TB and higher. And here it will not lag behind the competitor.
But WDC is proud of its achievements in the field of hard disk drive with a helium environment. For four years since the introduction of this technology WDC has already released 18 million hard drives filled with helium. Now, the qualification is based on samples of storage capacity of 12 TB using helium. WDC believes that it will retain its technological leadership in larger volumes.
