The increase in notebook popularity caused a higher interest in ARM- architecture processors . They usually combine low energy consumption with the high functional integration, and high compatibility with programs, oriented to x86- architecture. Freescale, Qualcomm and NVIDIA propose the use of ARM- architecture processors in notebooks .
Associate in the interview with the head of OLPC organization acknowledged that the student notebook XO-2, which will appear in one and half years, can use a processor with ARM- architecture instead of present geode from AMD. Processors with ARM- architecture combine low energy consumption, developed functionality and acceptable cost. Currently, XO notebook energy consumption level (processor) is 5 W , which is considered as high TDP, since these computers must be used under the conditions of limited electric access .
The problem for OLPC is the absence of operating system Microsoft, which is close to Windows XP in functionality and assure compatibility with ARM- architecture. Currently, Windows mobile can work with such processors, but OLPC would like to obtain from Microsoft the adapted version for this operating system desktop class. Possibly, in one and half years OLPC will convince Microsoft to create this operating system. On OLPC concept , XO-2 notebook can use both Linux and Windows.
XO-2 notebooks will have a sensory display, which allow to convert them in electronic book . Besides improvement in the energy indices, the passage to ARM- processors will allow OLPC to decrease their dependence on processors suppliers , since as supplier now comes out only AMD company .
