AMD has announced the start of sales of new server processors. Eleven servers manufactured by its customers, including two on the platform server HP ProLiant Gen8, got new model of high-performance AMD Opteron processor 6200 and low-power AMD Opteron processor 4200. These processors, according to AMD, provide improved performance without increasing power consumption and are the best in the world of x86-compatible server processors in terms of price and performance.
Last month, HP has released two servers HP ProLiant Gen8 using the new Processor AMD Opteron, and this year plans to update the model ProLiant DL585 G7 and BL685c G7. It is also expected that Dell will update their servers running AMD, applying the new AMD Opteron processor models in the PowerEdge C6145, C6105, R415, R515, R715, R815, and M915.
Five new processors entered the market earlier this month, running at clock frequencies exceeding 100 MHz clock frequency of their predecessors, without increasing power consumption. Here is a list of new models:
- AMD Opteron 6284 SE: 16 cores, 2.7 GHz, TDP 140W, price $ 1265;
- AMD Opteron 6278: 16 cores, 2.4 GHz, TDP 115 W, price $ 989;
- AMD Opteron 4276 HE: 8 cores, 2.6 GHz, TDP 65W, price $ 455;
- AMD Opteron 4240: 6 cores, 3.4 GHz, TDP 95 W, price $ 316;
- AMD Opteron 4230: 6 cores, 2.9 GHz, TDP 65W, price $ 377.
According to AMD, Opteron processor enjoys great popularity especially after the release in November 2011 of new server processors based on Bulldozer core . It has attracted many large customers, deploying supercomputers, including Blue Waters project of the National Science Foundation USA, a project of Canadian company TELUS, build a virtual private cloud, and the modernization project, Jaguar supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
