NVIDIA company was preparing the announcement of Triple SLI technology. It was assumed that the technology will be presented on 12 November with the chipset nForce 780i SLI, which will be the first platform for this technology by combining in a single system, three video cards Class GeForce 8800 GTX and GeForce 8800 Ultra. Only later Triple SLI support should regain chipsets nForce 680i SLI with three slots PCI Express x16.
The Chipset nForce 780i SLI, on the one hand will support PCI Express 2.0. According to the idea, the bus must have a beneficial impact on the effectiveness of Triple SLI technology. The Chipset nForce 680i SLI supports only PCI Express 1.x, and graphics slots work only at PCI Express x16 + PCI Express x16 + PCI Express x8. In short, as debut for Triple SLI chipsets nForce 780i SLI would be the preferred platform.
The chipset nForce 680i SLI has some problem to support Yorkfield processor . NForce 780i SLI had to finalize the Yorkfield support, and this has caused delays in chipset announcement - now it will be released only to 17 December. As you can imagine, Yorkfield support also important for Triple SLI technology, since this video power requires very productive processor.
Associate reported that NVIDIA decided to submit the Triple SLI technology separately from chipset nForce 780i SLI for an entire week before, in December 10, 2007. At least, This announcement will be made on December 10, and the necessary support for the implementation of components like Triple SLI in chipset nForce 780i SLI and the appropriate drivers can be presented later this morning.
Note that the dates considered for Triple SLI announcement and nForce 780i SLI are not conclusive.
