Intel company actively show the advantages of memory-type 3D XPoint, which it will produce in conjunction with Micron. Features of this memory in the face of reasonable cost and high performance will allow Intel to break away from its competitors in the server segment, although the company does not rule out that this memory type will have a competitor offered by other developers.
Micron CFO Ernie Maddock spoke at the conference, Barclays, where he shared his thoughts about the prospects for the memory type 3D XPoint.First of all, Micron expects that the memory of this type in 2018 will be able to generate more than 5-10% of revenue. As with all new 3D XPoint memory will gradually take root, especially in the conservative server segment. Small volumes of manufacture will not allow to drastically reduce the cost of a new memory type , and this, in turn, will deter market expansion.
Micron does not believe that 3D XPoint will take a lot of customers from the memory type DRAM and NAND. At least this will not happen until 2019-2020 years when 3D XPoint already formed a certain customer base.
