Chief Financial Officer of Micron Technology Ernest Maddock at the recent annual NASDAQ conference said that even with the existing price difference between solid-state drives and hard drives, the first provide an advantage in maintenance costs of 30%. The benefit of SSD is lower power consumption, higher reliability and ease of maintenance.
Of course, it is still too early to talk about the ability of SSD to drive hard drives out of magnetic storage devices from storage systems, but Micron's CFO is convinced that once the price level will allow solid-state drives to become the sole inhabitants of desktop computers and laptops. In the server segment, the replacement process will be longer, but the main arguments in favor of switching to the SSD in it will be precisely economic factors.
