Each major supplier of automotive components led its own development in the field of automating the driving process - even before the industry giants began to announce the creation of alliances. For example, Delphi cooperated with Audi / Volkswagen and NVIDIA, but it did not prevent it from conducting joint development with Intel and Mobileye. Actually, as reported by Reuters , this week Delphi announced the entry into an alliance with BMW, Intel and Mobileye, which will create a platform for the "roboboyles" of the German brand. By the way, competing concern Daimler some time secured the support of Bosch, so this kind of behavior is not new.
BMW generally believes that the high cost of development, high technology and high rates of new technologies introduction will force market participants to create alliances in the future, and therefore the number of global platforms on which "robobiles" of different brands will be built will be limited. BMW created in alliance with Intel and Delphi platform will not only use for their "robots" that will be out by 2021, but also plans to license these developments to third-party customers. By the way, this strategy is ready to adhere to Baidu and Volvo - with the only difference being that the latter is ready to make money on sales of software for robocar.
Delphi in the BMW project will participate in the already existing developments that were obtained at the stage of cooperation with Intel and Mobileye. The latter, in fact, will soon become one company, so the nominal number of members of the alliance will be reduced. BMW and Intel are also shareholders of HERE - one of the largest cartographic services inherited from Nokia. Delphi is ready not only to provide components and algorithms, but also to deal with their system integration.
