The transfer from DDR-2 to DDR-3 reduced the voltage from 1.8 to 1.5 V. Some memory producers asserted that the increase in the DDR-3 clock frequencies will consume more electric power, and require more effective cooling.
JEDEC Committee, which is occupied by the certification of new memory standards , on this week published a press release, which declared about the development of new DDR-3 version with the lowered supply voltage. Improvements in the memory manufacture technological process allow to reduce the voltage from 1.5 to 1.35 v. The new memory modules will use a new designation : PC3L-xxxx or DDR-3L. This DDR-3L will be compatible with all motherboards, which support DDR-3. Note this is not the last step on the DDR3 efficiency increase , since JEDEC plans also to reduce the default voltage to 1.25 v, or even lower value. Related Products :
