California scientists put into question the future of SSDs . The reliability and durability of MLC NAND chips can not last forever, STEC engineers found a soution that would deprive SSD opponents of another argument in its favor.
The presented technology is called CellCare and more than 10-fold increase endurance of flash memory cells.STEC use memory MLC NAND, manufactured on 24 nm technology: a cell of similar products can withstand approximately 3 million write cycles, but the use of CellCare mechanisms will overwrite every cell 40 000 times. For the storage capacity of 400 GB it is equivalent to 7.3 petabytes of data (10 overwrites the entire SSD per day for five years).
The technology is implemented in the controller, developed by STEC, and is a set of mechanisms that monitor the parameters of memory cells and performing the required actions on the base of data. In addition, CellCare includes special algorithms for signal processing and error correction.
Solid-state drives, which will include CellCare support , will be on sale later this year. Related Products :
