Imagination Technologies Company has announced a new graphics solution for miniature wearable computers and devices Internet Things. Core PowerVR Series5XE GX5300 has an area of 0.55 square millimeter - the developer calls it the smallest GPU in the industry.
Most of the wearable devices today use non-optimal solutions like processors, originally developed for use in smartphones. As portable devices are more limited energy reserve, there are problems associated with their short-lived battery life. Tiny GPU can be used in the optimal solution, however, Imagination does not specify the level of power consumption of the new graphics.
It is known that the peak performance level of GX5300 is 1 gigaflops and 250 megapixels per second at 250 MHz. Core will be able to handle video resolutions up to 720p, also uses the GPU texture compression technology PVRTC.
