In September last year, Intel bought Movidius, the developer of the original visual processor Myriad (VPU).  The first generation of Movidius processors was based on tablets and smartphones from the Google Tango project.  These were systems for digitizing space in real time, which is useful to both people and robots.  The former will be able to receive tips and improve orientation in the terrain, the latter will be able to see everything with their own eyes.   So, last night, Intel introduced the third generation Myriad VPU Myriad X. In a novelty to hardware blocks, a neural network for deep machine learning has been added to the simple and, in general, simple processing of video streams.  According to Intel, the company was able to create the industry's first AI solution with as little consumption as the Myriad X. Moreover, no one has yet released a VPU with its own neural network on board.  The performance of this network reaches 1 TOPS (trillion operations per second).  The overall performance of the Myriad X is estimated at 4 TOPS. In total, the solution includes about 20 specialized hardware blocks for one or another processing of video or static images.  The chip allows connecting up to 8 cameras with a resolution of 720p (RGB) and a frequency of up to 180 Hz on 16 MIPI lines.  Process video streams of 16 128-bit vector processors VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word).  Of course, all streams are processed in parallel.  The amount of internal memory in the chip is 2.5 MB with a capacity of 450 GB / s.  In fact, this is the built-in cache memory.  The total bandwidth of the Myriad X VPU reaches 700 megapixels per second. Visual processors Myriad company Intel promotes for such niches as autopilots for cars, drones other robotic systems.  On the basis of the solution Myriad 2 released an interesting drone DJI Spark, and a month earlier, Intel began shipping the Myriad 2 platform as USB stubs Movidius Neural Compute Stick for connecting to PCs and laptops.  And through a special expander to one system, you can simultaneously connect four of these devices.  Developers should like it.  Sulay around, Myriad X will also come out as a USB stub, because he has a real neural network inside.
