The staff of Photonic Network Research Institute at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT, Japan), announced the possibility of increasing the channel capacity of optical communication by about 7-10 times. The invention is based on a combination of light and photonic-crystal fiber.
The main element of technology has become a quantum dots, or particles of semiconductor crystals used as a source and a light signal to an amplifier that can operate stably at an optical frequency up to 70 THz.
Quantum dots nanometer dimensions are placed on the semiconductor surface, but scientists propose to modify the technology and move to a separation subnanometer layered structure. This method involves the applied layer thickness of less than one nanometer, which will separate the semiconductor and an array of quantum dots, which will place the particles with high density and homogeneity. Besides the use in optical networks and communication technology can be used in other, non-information systems areas. For example, the received waves pass easily through the skin and can be used to create high-resolution medical scanners.
