Michael Noonen, executive vice president of Globalfoundries, reported that the chip maker is going to ramp up production capacity in New York and Singapore in order to meet the growing demand for semiconductor products used in mobile devices.
American facotry - Fab 8 - capable of handling up to 60,000 300mm wafers per month. The facility focuses on products with topological 28 nm, but in the future it can be implemented and improved manufacturing processes. For example, Globalfoundries already provides customers with samples of 20-nm products, their mass production will be made at Fab 8. At the end of 2013 in the same production factory trial begins from 14 nm technology.
In March this year, Globalfoundries acquired from ProMOS Technologies more than 1,000 pieces of equipment designed to process 300-mm wafers. It will be located at Fab 7 in Singapore, which will allow for the next year to increase the production capacity of the facility to one million wafers per year. Fab 7 produces chips with topological 40 nm and above.
Also there is Fab 1 in Germany with a capacity of 80,000 300mm wafers per month. Here the focus is on the technology of 45 nm or less.
