Yesterday NVIDIA not only presented the two-chip video card GeForce 9800 GX2, but also released the chipset series nForce 790i SLI, which is the evolutionary development of nForce 680i SLI and nForce 780i SLI. This chipset obtained the valuable support of 45 nm processors  yorkfield, and system bus PCI express 2.0 (was supported in previous chipset but using nForce 200 chip). The chipset Force 790i SLI at the same time injected support to DDR- 3 memory  . This chipset are subdivided in two versions: nForce 790i SLI and nForce 790i Ultra SLI. The second differ in terms of DDR 3-2000 support  (instead of DDR 3-1333) and in terms of higher overclocking potential. The price of ultra version will be also higher, and motherboard on its base will cost from $349 to $400.  DDR 3-2000 Support is realized by EPP 2.0, but there are some limitations. First, for regimes more than DDR 3-1800 memory modules must be distributed only on channel one  . Second, these modules must be placed in the second and fourth DIMM slots . Motherboard on base of chipset nForce 790i Ultra SLI possess Three slots PCI express x16 . The aluminum radiators is coupled with thermal tubes. The chipset cooler has a special fan, whose rotation speed can be regulated from motherboard BIOS  . This chipset as before is produced on 90 nm technical process; therefore the heat emission level is sufficiently high. The picture above estimate the basic functional possibilities of chipset nForce 790i Ultra SLI. The official support of 45 nm  processors intel with 1600 MHz system bus allow to exploit the newest models core 2 Extreme. Note that the south bridge remain in A3 stepping ( good old  MCP nForce 570 SLI ). It ensures support to third slot PCI express x16, which corresponds to the specifications PCI express 1.0. This chipset is capable to support 62 lines PCI express. The chipset nForce 790i Ultra SLI support posted-Write shortcut and Broadcast technology . The first allow the for video cards to exchange data packets  , passing through memory system . The second allow to transmit one command for several video chips simultaneously. For quad SLI support will be required two video card geForce 9800 GX2, corresponding drivers, and also motherboard on base of chipsets nForce 780i SLI or nForce 790i SLI (nForce 790i Ultra SLI). As exception we can also note Skulltrail motherboard on base of intel chipset . Let us note that the memory controller in this chipsets was seriously optimized under penryn processors and DDR- 3 memory  ; therefore in many synthetic benchmarks nForce of 790i Ultra SLI memory system is better than intel chipset  . The special feature  OF NVIDIA chipsets is the possibility of asynchronous change in memory and processor system bus frequency . This can facilitate overclock. In overclock , intel processors with new NVIDIA chipset can achieve decent results. Motherboard BIOS contains many function to attain the maximum results .  In particular,  EPP 2.0 expansions allow compatible memory modules to work in regime DDR 3-2000 with 1.9v stress. With apparent high costs, the chipset nForce 790i Ultra SLI has all chances to find success : It support 3- way SLI technology  and Quad SLI, excellently overclock intel processors  and DDR- 3 memory . Furthermore, it support ESA interface , which gives complete control over basic system parameters  . Related Products :
