Strongly shaken by a scandal with an underestimation of the emissions of diesel engines, the German auto concern Volkswagen is now trying to form a more favorable image. Apparently, this goal is pursued and the interview of the head of the company Herbert Diess , which refers to the resource Reuters . The text of the interview was published by the Volkswagen corporate publication on the website of the automaker.
The head of Volkswagen admitted that if in the "old world" the competitors of the company headed by him are Toyota, Hyundai and French automakers, then in the "new world" the competitor is Tesla. There are such areas in which Volkswagen wants to outperform Tesla, and is ready to focus on the experience of an ambitious American company. Last, by the way, last year released no more than 84,000 electric vehicles, and Volkswagen produced almost 6 million cars. Tesla, according to Diss, has abilities that Volkswagen lacks. For example, about half of the engineers in Tesla are engaged in software, and the German giant has this proportion much lower. Tesla's strengths include electric motors, a charging network, "autopilot" technology and global network communications, as well as an original approach to the sale of electric vehicles.
Volkswagen is ready to pull in these directions, but to reach the Tesla level is not the limit of aspirations of the German auto giant, it wants to be better. Now Volkswagen's efforts are concentrated in the development of electric vehicles on fundamentally new platforms. The company's partners have also made good progress in implementing active driver assistance systems, and NVIDIA often uses Audi cars to demonstrate the capabilities of its electronics.
