Recently AMD start the transfer all family video chip r6xx/rV6xx on 65 nm technical process, including the high end model r600, then associate with reference to the high-ranking officers AMD reported that on Friday 80 nm version of chip r600 will have very limited print run. Most likely, this will limit to those engineering models, which are now demonstrated in CeBIT 2007.
However, the series of video card families radeon x2900, which will be put on the market during May, will be based on 65 nm version chip r600. Now AMD make all resources to the transfer Of r600 to the thinner 65 nm technical process. Even if there is problems with the release of suitable chip R600 on this technical process : The 65 nm technical process will make sense since the chip (R600) has 720 mln transistors; therefore Amd has to decrease the core area to reduce the prime cost. As associates report, passage on 65 nm technical process at the same time will allow to reduce the level of energy consumption and also will enlarge the frequency potential of chip r600 to values on the order of 1 GHz.
We already described about the advantages of 65nm and about the possible failures, which always appear upon transfer of complex chips to the new technical process. However, company must be assured that problems will not rise, if not then AMD decided to go with this risky step. Finally, simpler chips RV630 and RV610 has already been produced on 65 nm technical process at TSMC . Related Products :
