AMD today in press release spoke about : AMD adds multi-Core triple threat to desktop roadmap. In other words, tri-core processors are reality.
According to official statement, the promising processors family for desktop systems, which includes the dual core phenom 2X and four core processor Phenom 4X, will be actually augmented by three cores processors . Obviously, these CPU will be called Phenom 3X; however, today they have the code name : toliman.
AMD Tri-core processors will not use specific semiconductor crystals, they will be obtained with the switch off of one core from the four . In addition This will allow AMD to get a ride effectively of bad core in four core processor . Promising tri-corer processors will have 1.5 Mbytes cache in the second level ( 512 kbyte per core) and the divided cache in the third level will be equal to 2 Mbytes. These CPU will be compatible with the processor socket AM2+ and, respectively, they will support dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM and hypertransport 3.0 interface .
AMD reported that such products will be aimed at the average segment while four core processor will be positioned as high productive solutions.
The release of such CPU from AMD with three cores is planed for the first quarter in the following year, simultaneously with dual core phenom X2. Let us recall that four core processor AMD desktop processors will be present prior the end of this year .
The plans of company contain the development of the declared ideas in the form of promising tri-core 45 nm processor heka, whose appearance is planned in 2009.
