All existing 45 nm desktop Intel processors are C0 stepping . in this case the delivery of four core processors Core 2 quad were postponed to the second-half of the current block without official reasons. It was assumed that the existing Yorkfield processors have some hardware problems. Usually to correct such problems at this level it is required to release new revision , but nothing was communicated about the corresponding Intel plans .
Last week Intel company began to extend this document , which talk about the forthcoming transfer of processor Core 2 extreme QX9650 (3.0 GHz) in new stepping . This model is the only Yorkfield processor officially supplied . During March 2008 this processor will be translated from stepping C0 to stepping C1 , here is the list of changes:
- New marking for C1 stepping processors (SLAN3 - > SLAWN);
- CPUID Value will change from 0x00010676 to 0x00010677;
- C1 stepping processors will be compatible with C0 stepping processors ;
- There is no Changes in electrical, mechanical and processors thermal specifications ;
- For platforms, created according to Intel recommendations , no changes for new processors support is required. It will be sufficient to update the motherboard bios.
In the functional sense new stepping will not also bring any changes. New processors will begin to reach users on 3 March, 2008. We hope that new stepping will bring some improvements in the overclocking potential. It would be desirable also that series 45 nm processors Core 2 quad Q9xxx will be originally based on C1 stepping .
Intel company simultaneously stated about the removal of some 65 nm mobile processors:
