The common theme of recent months is the continuing shortage of memory chips and LCD panels used in the manufacture of smartphones and laptops. It would seem that manufacturers of smartphones and laptops should use different types of components, but the DigiTimes website with reference to industry sources reports that these segments of the market are able to exert mutual influence.
At least, the continued growth potential of the smartphone market is pushing its participants to follow the example of leaders in the face of Samsung and Apple, which are preparing to release new models in the current half-year. New smartphones will require memory chips and LCD panels, so the assemblers have already reserved certain quotas for components with the expectation of an increase in demand. This means that memory manufacturers will give priority to the release of microcircuits for use in smartphones, and PC orders will be serviced on a residual basis. In conditions of limited production capacity, this will exacerbate not only the shortage of RAM chips, but also the growth of memory prices. Manufacturers of components, of course, in this situation remain in the win, as the prices for their products grow, but PC manufacturers either have to take unpopular measures in the form of price increases, or sacrifice their already not very tiny profits.
