It is into 1985 that Microsoft proposed the very first version of Windows, Windows 1.0, which was has a simple graphic interface being grafted from the operating system MS-DOS. The basic idea having chaired the design of Windows was to make the computers accessible to all  by proposing windows (from where the name) and later icons with mouse access, peripheral  more intuitive than the keyboard. starting from version 3.1 of Windows  Microsoft really managed to impose its system. Since, Windows made way and the versions followed one another until Windows XP, left  on October 25, 2001. Without pointing out all the characteristics of Windows XP, we will underline simply that this system was the first definitively to bury the systems 16/32 bits of  type Windows 9x for general public, Microsoft having finally declined its offer NT on this sector with a system completely 32 bits. October 2001... Here thus nearly five years that no new version of Windows , just some update or fix with the Service Packs of Windows XP . However, in the end of  2001, the rumours went already  on the successor of Windows XP, known under the name  code  Longhorn. Laster this Longhorn became Windows Vista, the commercial name of the future  operating system version from Microsoft, awaited -during 2007. We do not evoke all these dates by passion to the historical precision but to underline  the incredible delay taken by Microsoft on the Longhorn project, altered more than one once! In spite of the various reorganizations practised within Microsoft. Windows Vista introduction With all rumor and hustle to the Vista project last months, many thinks that Windows Vista is not more than a new graphic interface for Windows XP. To be clear from the start of this review, it is definitively not the case . we should start by making the two principal functionalities which are WinFS and Monad. WinFS aims to succeed the filing system NTFS by adding the indexing of contents to it nd this will make the hard disk as a kind of gigantic data base. Basing itself  on the technology SQL, and envisaged at the beginning for a native integration with windows Vista, WinFS will thus not form part of the final system version  and with it will be proposed separately, at non specified date. Monad was one of the other strong points of Vista since it was question here to replace the traditional command line and offer more advanced one  with scripting functions  , which evoke  certain similarity with the Linux . Monad, since was renamed in PowerShell, and also was separated  from Vista and will be proposed separately. Being already at the stage of RC1, Monad should probably arrive more quickly than WinFS. we could continue the list of the missing functions which will be added in the final Vista, but it is preferable to concentrate on those which are present :-) . Windows Vista: a new core, NT6 Contrary to Windows XP which was only one simple evolution of the core  Windows 2000, Windows Vista benefits from a very new core. The core is in some extent the main part of the operating system since it manages inter alia things the accesses to the memory, or  requests of  various system peripherals . Vista thus introduces the core NT6 and in the level of the major update we notes a dynamic addressing system report. Under XP, certain  memories place were allocated in a static way and their reconfiguration required a modification of the registers base and as it should fellow  restarting the system, which occurred in particular with the installation of system driver. Vista thus puts a term at this and naturally proposes a mechanism of access report protection , mechanism inherited the Service Pack 2 of Windows XP. Concerning the maximum of memory addressable, Vista proves to be identical to XP. This is why ReadyBoost do a fast test to the usb drive to determine if this one is usable . Microsoft require at least of 256 mb of free space with a flow of 3,5 Mb/s in reading and 2,5 Mb/s in writing. It should be noted that Microsoft stores data in an encrypted way on USB, to avoid any problem of confidentiality. The scheduler,is this component that carry about the scheduling tasks for the CPU, this one was also improved in particular with the attributes of priority to certain tasks. in particular  giving the priority to  audio and video tasks in order to avoid the current problems . Microsoft also introduces with Vista the power management  mode  ACPI S4 witch makes  possible to divide by two the time of setting into hibernation whereas the size of the hibernation file is reduced by 50%. Finally of new mechanisms of errors management  . For the peripherals hardware , Vista has Windows Hardware Structures Error which is based on the specifications of the  PCI-Express bus to give more details on hardware errors,  which according to data\'s collected by Microsoft correspond to nearly 10% of reason when Windows freeze. The dynamic partitionning also makes its entry in Vista, with the possibility of adding components to a working systems without restarting the PC. Side applications, Windows Vista also has a new mechanism of errors description , able to restart  the crashed  application. As it is known new core will require new driver. Windows Vista introduces what Microsoft named Windows Driver Foundation, a new driver model . It is a question here of replacing the famous WDM or Windows Driver Model and  facilitating developers task while enabling them to create more easily the drivers.  Microsoft thus aims at improving the stability of its system . Side driver installation, Vista propose many update with the new graphic interface and also a new safety mechanisms . When the system detects a new material, it starts the installation and the required driver is found, either on the hard disk or on Windows Update, no intervention by user is necessary. In this case, only an icon indicates the progress report of the operation in the notification zone in the tasks bar  . If driver was found the user is then invited to insert the driver disc. driver must be signed from microsoft so that the system agrees to install them without additional alarm. Currently some driver  for Windows XP are compatible with Vista, even if their use is not recommended because of the stability problems which can result from this. Also let us specify that Vista integrates an analysis performances mechanism ,  which is able to identify if the driver in particular slows down the the system boot. Windows Vista supports the Win32 model, which makes it theoretically compatible with the Windows XP applications. Of course technologies NET are also proposed by Vista under  NET FrameWork 3.0 which include Windows Foundation Presentation , which succeeds to the old model GDI+. Windows Vista installation at the moment, the version Beta 2 of Windows Vista is a DVD disk and occupies nearly 3,2 Gig of hard disk space. The installation process was entirely re-examined, compared with  Windows XP, and the usual succession of blue windows with indications text is not here any more.  The stages of the installation process  were  reduced to the minimum. we starts thus by choosing the language of installation, the keyboard type  and the country to determine regional specificities (date format, local currency, etc). Then the user is invited to enter the product key before accepting the licence. According to the system configuration , you will be able to choose between an installation in update of your Windows XP or a custum installation, the dual boot being automatically proposed if a windows XP version  is detected. By selecting the custum  installation you will  have to select the hard disk and partition where windows vista will store its file.  On our test system the installation was completed in 25  minutes. as in windows xp it is necessary to create a user account user. note :first windows vista start. we installed vista in system coupled with radeon x1600 pro 256mb but the system result in balck screen right after the install a kind of system stand by.as a solution fro such problem: u should restart in sade mode with command prompt support and then type in the console:devmgmt.msc and press enter:-). u should desable the first and the second display adaptator then restart your pc and windows vista will work normaly.u could then download driver from ati site and install them... Windows Vista: the hardware compatibility Vista requires a rather powerful machine and it would be a dream to hope that vista will start in conditions of Pentium III 500 MHz. According to Microsoft, it need at least the following configuration : Processor 800 MHz 512 Mb  RAM Graphics card compatible DirectX 9.0 with 32 MB RAM Hard disk 20 GIg This list is like very often at Microsoft an optimistic requirement and reality suggests the following configuration rather: Processor 1 GHz 1 Gig  RAM Graphics card DirectX 9.0 (Shader Model 2.0) with 128 Mb of memory and WDDM driver Hard disk 40 Gig For the first time Microsoft thus imposes a recommendation on the graphic card level. But such is the price to pay to benefit from the new graphic interface Aero and its 3d effects ... On the support level of the existing hardware, Beta 2 of Vista seems to be good, a large number of peripherals being recognized at default, whereas certain hardware  have driver  already on Windows Update . Of course all is not  perfect and certain hardware like  webcams, sound card etc.. do not have driver dedicated in the large majority of  cases. However  many manufacturers propose already driver in Beta version for Vista. It is in particular the case of ATI and NVIDIA, but also of Creative or Realtek . For our tests we used Vista on several machines of which was a conroe based system and two A64 system wil dual and single core. but we chosed that benchmark should be done in single A64 system witch we consider as the buget today system . Windows Vista: Aero Theme One of the most visible update that come with Windows Vista is due naturally to its graphic interface Aero Glass. It acts besides  the functions which made run application  using the capability of  3d  graphics chip. And to benefit from the new interface effects which are windows animation or their transparency it is necessary to have a graphics card of type DirectX 9.0 having in addition compatible WDDM driver. Concretely, the cards of  type GeForce FX 5200 and Radeon 9500 or higher are compatible with Aero.  Of course Vista for those witch dont have a capable video card offer the two old clasic theme. In a word, these are even two reduced interfaces which are available: Vista BASIC which is rather close to the interface XP and Traditional, which remind the  Windows 2000 interface.we had done on this review benchmark with will show the Aero Glass vs classic in term of system performance .to check how much system resource will this aero theme use. To benefit from Aero Glass it will at least be necessary to have  i945G at INTEL, the 915G is not offering any support . Microsoft states besides that INTEL will not propose a driver WDDM for  i915G...NVIDIA GeForce 6150  supports for its part the Aero interface offered by  Vista Beta 2 t, just like Radeon Xpress 200 from ATI. we note that during our tests we observed a rather weak performances in the resolution 1280x1024, default resolution of many LCD monitor, with this kind of IGP. The fault in particular with the shared memory... Aero consist naturally on DirectX and in fact only the visible part of API ,programming  libraries , which make possible for developers to create applications benefitting from the new graphic capability of   operating system. Technically, Aero is based on a  new model of graphic driver called WDDM (Windows Display Model Driver). Aero uses the Direct3D pipeline . All that is managed by Desktop Window Manager and Unified Composition Engine (EUA). The desktop is  recomposed dynamically several times in a  second, just like the contents of each window, to finally offer effects rather interesting as the contents previsualisation when windows are reduced on the tasks bar . The EUA uses various techniques to avoid overloading the memory band-width  and  processor at the time when it  post  the windows. Graphic driver WDDM and DirectX 9.0 while waiting for DirectX 10... With regard to graphic acceleration, Windows Vista lays out as we above evoked with new graphic driver model , the WDDM. This one is built entirely on DirectX, which acts like a kind of intermediary between the graphic driver and the graphic core. Model WDDM forces the graphic driver to be divided into two parts: a driver  as a user mode, and  another  in mode core, the goal being always to ensure a maximum  stability. All or almost being carried out on the user mode level , a simple restarting of the driver is enough in the event of hung up. Another major update, the GPU becomes a resource shared between the applications and several applications 3d are carried out at the same time. Thanks to this new system, the driver  graphic installation does not require any more a system restart. Under Vista, we disting two levels of DirectX support: the first is based on specifications improved of DirectX 9.0c, second  on DirectX 10. This news 3d API of Microsoft will present in particular the Shader Model 4.0 which takes again some of XBox 360 principes  . This one should thus offer the shaders unification instructions   in order to treat in same manner the vertexes and  pixel shaders whereas it would be a question of introducing a new type of shaders or geometry shaders. But the other update of DirectX 10 comes owing to the fact that the capacities of  compatible graphics chip will be fixed and identical  mark to the other. Today DirectX ask the graphics chips to know which functions are supported  and which functions are not supported: with DirectX 10 the hardware will have to be unified and it must deal with  all the Microsoft specifications  . That should thus put a term at the functions owners which we finds at ATI but not at NVIDIA or present at nvidia but not in ATI . Will know finally that Vista will ensure a downward compatibility with the applications DirectX 8 (for example). side OpenGL, Windows Vista is based on the software engine OpenGL 1.4, there is no problem thus for  Doom fans , even if the ATI Beta driver do not include OpenGL support  ... Windows Vista: first contacts with the Aero interface At the time of its first starting, Vista, which does not have yet its own loading screen  , posts in a short moment a Windows logo  before presenting the desktop comprising three icons (recycle bin, Vista presentation  and bugs report ) and the tasks bar .  Admittedly we would have preferred to find on the desktop a short cut for all the essential componnet, but Microsoft decided differently. if  your machine has a recent graphics board, the tasks  bar is posted in transparency and we immediately notes the new shape start button  , witch became circular. as u can see the copy window is now more advanced there is information about the source file the distination and even the operation speed. The desktop also show  the first update of Windows Vista: SideBar. It acts here with a functionality strongly inspired from MacOS (in particular). at default , there is right to an analogical clock with the modifiable presentation, to a procession of  images . Let us specify that SideBar can be masked via simple double-click on its icon . Internet explorer 7 as all recent browser offer tabed browsing with allow to open many site "or tab" in the same windows. With regard to the applicatifs delivered with Windows Vista, Microsoft  add/move certain number future  which come with Internet  explorer. Windows Vista benefits from a  new version Internet explorer, called  7.0+. In addition to the changes brought to the engine , with in particular modifications on the side of  Internet, style sheets (CSS) .internet explorer 7 present more secure surfing  in protected mode and this same with an administrator account , his operation being related to the UAC. The idea being to offer a last rampart to the potential attacks by making sure that even if it can walk through all the  protection mechanisms of  Internet explorer, it can touch the  registers base or essential system files. Impossible thus to install software without the knowledge of  user, or to modify certain parameters system. ActiveX controls are also carried out in this protected space, which can be only one good thing! Microsoft also integrated, in addition to the the  anti-phishing filter with was introduced since Service Pack 2 of Windows XP. windows media player and windows dvd maker the update process become even easyer with the new interface. microsoft added a new windows with will list and show all availble update with tone of new future making update look better . screen shot of ALT-TAB and WINDOWS-TAB effect windows photo gallery we could talk more about the new capability of windows vista but this was not the only question why we decided to write the review.we looked to check the performance of windows vista vs windows xp with and without aero theme. The system used was based in a budget one since we look to see how much will the aero theme impact the system performance: CPU:AMD 64 3000+ @ 2600 mhz 512 kb cache Motherboard:ASUS A8N-E delux SLI Nforce 4 ultra using the lastest bios. Memory:2 Gig corsir xms ddr 3200 running at 250mhz with 5-3-3-2T timing Video card:ASUS 7900 gt  256 mb DDR3 runing at stock HDD : western degital 320 gig Sata 2 we used the lastest nvidia driver 96.33_forceware_winvista_x86_international avaible at the moment of review.sound and other additional driver was downloaded via windows update. As a start we should note that the number of benchmark done was reduced since some application refused to run under vista here is the list: -3dmark 2001 -3dmark 2006 -F.E.A.R: crash to desktop -Pc mark 2006: could not be installed Note: as windows vista still in beta release many probleme was accured during our benchmark. we will note only the improtant one : -using x1600 video card many BSOD"bleu screen of death".situation sweem a lot better using x1900xtx , x1950 xtx and x1800xt .for nvidia card we got poor performance using low end serie geforce fx but driver install was ok and was no bsod probleme. - Need for speed most wanted crash using nvidia msi 7900 gtx card after few minutes.for unkown reason. -Sli configuration result in black screen just after the boot. after talking about the most accured crash we could now contunie with benchmark list.as microsoft added new memory managment system we started by testing the memory subsytem of windows vista having as reference windows xp sp2 Everest 2006 Windows Vista RC 1 Beta 5728 vs windows xp sp2 everest memory Side memory read write and latency borth system have here about the same result.windows vista got slight advantage in memory copy but windows xp take the lead in memory read and write benchmark .the two operating system has the same memory latency according to everest 2006 Everest cpu Here is cpu result windows xp show advantage over windows vista in all test but this is quite normal since windows xp tested was runing with about 25 process while vista has about 60 .All those background services since they are runing they should eat some cpu resource.so as far as cpu performance according to everest benchmark if we take in mind background runing service ammount borth system should get equal score if not with slight + in the vista side. Sandra Windows Vista RC 1 Beta 5728 vs windows xp sp2 sandra 2007 cpu Sandra here confirm the previous result from everest .windows xp still leading but with pretty small score. sandra 2007 memory Side memory brandwidth in sandra test we are getting the same figure as abrove.from 1 to 3 % performance lost gowing from windows xp to vista. sandra 2007 hdd The hdd performance according to sandra are equal in the two system with 57 mb . Pc mark 2002 Windows Vista RC 1 Beta 5728 vs windows xp sp2 pc mark cpu well.since pc mark 2006 refuse to be installed and pc mark 2005 could not give  full cpu score due to windows media 9 codec "witch also won t to install under vista" we used a pretty old benchmark witch is pc mark 2006.the result gotten proce that there is not large performance impact gowing from vista to windows xp. pc mark hdd well time come to pc mark hdd score here windows xp prove to be about 10 % faster than windows vista and this result are gotten due to cached file read/write benchmark.so it is pretty clear that windows xp have better hdd driver. Pc mark 2005 pc mark 2005 memory Pc mark 2005 has another opinon regarding the memory subsystem performance and give higher score for windows xp.the deference here is about 5%. pc mark 2005 cpu The cpu score from pc mark 2005 are posted like other benchamrk result.there is  slight improvement for windows xp,witch as explained abrove is due to number or runing service. super pi Well here again windows xp proove to be about 10% faster again as know super 1.4 is memory latency and brandwidth based in addition for sure to the processing power.we should note that SSE2 version of super pi and the standard version also fail under windows vista. winrar Windows Vista RC 1 Beta 5728 vs windows xp sp2 here is one application from our dailly use.windows xp is about 5 % faster.winrar as super pi is based in the memory brand-width 3d mark benchmark 3dmark 2003 test 3 dmark 2003 the good old know video card benchmark show about 14% performance between the two system.this should correspond to the graphic and cpu subsystem,since 3d mark 2003 is a bit cpu depondant. 3dmark 2005 test 3 dmark 2005 is less cpu depondant it show smaller variance from the two system . Gaming benchmark far cry In real gaming this as u can see was another story.windows xp here show it best side "thanks to display driver".and here it offer higher performance than windows vista. u should note the addition score windows vista 5728 classic witch is under windows vista but using the classic theme.so we have in bleu  windows vista using the classic theme in red windows xp sp2 and in green windows vista aero glass theme.as u already noted the performance impact between the two vista theme is very small. nfs most wanted need for speed most wanted show about the same as far cry but the deference between windows xp and windows vista in smaller here.note that in this case using the aero theme cost about 13% in game performance. half life 2 Half life 2 engine is completely lost under windows vista no metter witch theme used the score is poor about 25% from the windows xp performance.it is clear that there is a driver issue here. prey prey in opposite to all previous benchmark show good result using the two system .windows vista and windows xp has about the same performance.the classic theme has a slight advantage but this is lower than 1 fps. quake 4 The same figure showed using prey was repeated using quake . at exception that windows xp has about 8% higer performance is this benchmark.
