The abundance of reviews of Skylake-X processors on foreign resources allow to quickly reveal the "weaknesses" of new products. For example, in the material of the German site GameStar.de , the strange proportion of Core i9-7900X processor speed in games compared to representatives of older families - Broadwell-E and Haswell-E, alarmed. Even with an increased number of cores and a higher frequency, the Core i9-7900X turned out to be slower than the older processors.
The author of the review asked Intelrepresentatives for clarifications , and they admitted that this effect gives a new bus "cellular" type, which is used to connect the blocks inside the Skylake-X processors. Broadwell-E processors, in turn, use the old ring bus, and in this type of computational loads it manifests itself better. Recall that in Skylake-X, Intel refused to use the same type of bus, because it did not allow to scale the number of cores within reasonable limits of
power consumption.
However, Intel makes it clear that in a number of applications the new bus provides a speed increase. Changes in the cache structure in Intel's comments are not mentioned, although our colleagues are inclined to believe that this factor influenced the performance of Skylake-X in games. So, the volume of the third level cache has decreased, and the amount of cache of the second level available to each core has increased from 256 KB to 1 MB. Related Products :
