The organization JEDEC yesterday confirmed that it is going to publish the final version of the DDR5 specifications next year, and some details about the new standard will be made public on June 19 this year at a special event. There is no specific information on DDR5 yet, but JEDEC promises to double the density of information storage and its transmission speed, improvements at the level of power consumption and interface organization. In parallel, the development of "hybrid" memory options for installation in the connector NVDIMM-P, combining the properties of a solid-state drive and a RAM module.
Some time ago, when representatives of AMD generously distributed interviews in the run-up to the announcement of Ryzen 7, they mentioned the desire to update the evolutionary method of desktop processors over the next three to four years. This means that the Socket AM4 platform will live without significant changes until 2020, and DDR5 support will require the introduction of a new processor socket. In any case, new motherboards to processors with DDR5 support will be exactly needed. Whether Intel will move to DDR5 at a faster pace is hard to say - at least in the server segment, support for this memory will most likely be realized earlier than in the desktop.
