The main advantage of ARM processor architecture is low power. Holding recently launched an attack on an expanding market microserver.
The concept of Internet Things requires a computer network objects that can interact with each other or with the environment by means of integrated technology solutions. Accordingly, each of the items must be fitted with its own processor, which will consume a little energy.
According to the chief engineer ARM, Mike Mueller the company is currently working on a processor that is capable of operating at a voltage close to the threshold of CMOS transistors, and the frequency of the order of several tens of kilohertz. According to Mueller, the objects in the network IoT can be fed from both external sources and to engage in self-sufficiency, that is, store energy from environmental factors. In the latter case, it is important not only efficiency of the processor, but also the speed of its work.
The threshold switching voltage CMOS transistor is in the range from 0.3 to 0.6 volts. Thus, developers need to go to different trade-offs, balancing between speed and power consumption. Interestingly, to further improve the ratio of energy consumption and performance engineers are ready to use even lower voltage threshold. Three years ago, Mueller made no secret of skepticism about such developments, but today the chief engineer of the ARM does not deny that the company has created several sub-threshold designs.
